The Data Unit’s InfoBase goes from strength to strength
- a central, online information system containing relevant data for an area e.g. a local authority area, a region or nationally;
- the ability to present information in standard reports, tables and maps;
- all necessary data management;
- a customised “look and feel” for local or regional use; and
- technical support and training.
Successful launch of InfoBase
We successfully launched InfoBaseCymru at the WLGA conference in June and welcomed many visitors to our stand. Everyone seemed very impressed with what they were shown. Use of the InfoBaseCymru service has continued to increase since its launch.
You can access InfoBaseCymru at www.infobasecymru.net (opens in new window)
Exciting Developments planned
We have launched InfoBaseCymru as a developmental service in English only. Our next key task is to migrate the service to Version 6 of the Instant Atlas software. This will bring significant improvements in its functionality and most importantly will enable us to provide a fully bilingual service. We are busy working on this at the moment and expect to announce a firm migration date before the end of this year.
Local InfoBase systems
The first pilot InfoBase local information system was also successfully launched in June. InfoBaseCaerffili has been developed for the Caerphilly Local Service Board (LSB) and is accessible through the Caerphilly Council website. The site received an impressive 3500 website hits in its first two months.
The LSB is already looking to develop the site further. This includes exploring and challenging the potential of the system to provide information beneficial to the public on all aspects of ‘life in Caerphilly’, by using information from across different organisations.
Further information about the development of InfoBaseCaerffili is contained in the most recent Assembly Government LSB newsletter.
Other pilot systems have been successfully developed for Denbighshire LSB and Powys, with local roll-out plans in place.
We are also currently developing local information systems for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Bridgend LSB, Conwy County Borough Council and Flintshire County Council. We are talking to a number of other councils and partnerships with a view to providing similar services for them.
We are pleased and excited by the positive response we’ve received to the InfoBase concept. With ever-increasing financial pressures, this cost effective data dissemination and management service is already delivering real efficiencies for local government in Wales.
