The Data Unit’s InfoBase goes from strength to strength

InfoBase is a service which has:
  • a central, online information system containing relevant data for an area e.g. a local authority area, a region or nationally;
  • the ability to present information in standard reports, tables and maps;
  • all necessary data management;
  • a customised “look and feel” for local or regional use; and
  • technical support and training.

We successfully upgraded InfoBaseCymru to a new version of software in January. This brought with it full bilingual functionality as well as improvements in the maps and presentation of tables. It is now even easier to access information quickly and effectively.

We continue to maintain and update datasets and have included additional datasets such as local authority financial data, in response to demand. Our data release schedule is also available. This details, to the best of our knowledge, when updates to data are likely to take place.

Local InfoBase systems

Since launching our first pilot local information site at the June 2009 WLGA conference (InfoBaseCaerffili), we developed two more pilot sites (Powys-i and InfoBaseSirDdinbych). We have subsequently moved out of the pilot stage into development of five more local information systems.

InfoBaseVale, Bridgend County InfoBase and StatsConwy have all gone live over the last six months. InfoBaseNewport is due to be released in the summer. We have also developed a site for the South West Wales Regional Learning Partnership to pilot a number of data sets.

We are finalising requirements for a further two systems which we expect to see launched, at least in pilot form, later this year.

The range and variety of the InfoBase systems being developed – local authority, local service boards and regional partnerships - demonstrates the flexibility of the InfoBase product and the ability for systems to be tailored around local needs.

The sites have given local authorities and partnerships the opportunity to share key information internally, with partnerships and externally with the general public. The ability to direct a caller to a local InfoBase system or to InfoBaseCymru has freed up time that would have been spent on sourcing and collating data to answer the query. The information that the sites provide can help ensure that the effectiveness of public services in the area is improved.

InfoBase is fast becoming a key reference tool with maps and tables being included in reports.

User forum

The InfoBase user forum will play a key role in ensuring that local information systems continue to provide value for money and contribute to making efficiencies and improvements in local service delivery.

We hosted the first forum in May. Representatives from the majority of our InfoBase local systems were able to attend. As a result, we were able to have a meaningful and useful discussion which will shape the way we move forward with InfoBase.
