WIMD 2008

WIMD 2008 is a measure of multiple deprivation at small area level. The results are given at Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) level. The multiple deprivation model which underpins the WIMD 2008 is based on distinct deprivation dimensions which can be recognised and measured separately.

Guidance
Guidance which highlights how WIMD 2008 should and should not be used is available to download. It is strongly recommended that you read this guidance before attempting to use WIMD 2008.

There were four principal outputs for WIMD 2008:

1. Summary report
WIMD 2008 summary report presents the deprivation scores and ranks for the 1,896 LSOAs in Wales for the eight domains of deprivation. For more information on these domains, go to the domains page.

WIMD 2008 has been produced at a small area level (LSOA). Data for the areas themselves can be combined to form larger areas, for example, local authorities. There is more than one way of combining this data, so no unique local authority rankings can be produced. The local authority summary report is also available to download and provides some figures at the local authority level.

To find a Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) reference, use the GIGateway postcode search facility.

2. Data
The ranks and scores for each of the LSOAs and for each domain and the multiple index are available to download as a Microsoft Excel table. These are also available on StatsWales on the Welsh Assembly Government’s website. In addition to the ranks and scores the indicator data for each of the domains was published on StatsWales.

3. Interactive maps
Interactive maps are key in illustrating the range of deprivation by LSOA across Wales. Each local authority’s LSOAs are presented in these maps, and users are able to select individual domains or the multiple index as measures. A thematic map shows how deprivation is distributed across Wales. To view these interactive maps, most users will first need to download a special piece of software compatible with the Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) format. A free SVG viewer can be downloaded from Adobe’s website, and is available for Windows, Mac and other operating systems.

Windows NT, 2000 or XP users may require their system administrators’ assistance to install the Adobe SVG Viewer. Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) users for the Mac will not be able to access these interactive maps, due to issues with IE itself.

4. Technical report
A full technical report, which provides clear details on the methodology used to develop WIMD 2008, will be available shortly.
