Understanding your information: An introduction to summary statistics

Aim

To introduce you to some top tips, tools and resources to help you summarise data and provide easy to understand statistics.

This course is intentionally introductory in its approach, as it is aimed at a beginner audience. No previous knowledge of data or statistics is assumed or required.

Content

Looking at a dataset for the first time can feel overwhelming, no matter how big or small. Summary statistics can help you to quickly and easily make sense of your data by simplifying the key trends. For example, taking an average can help you to understand what your data looks like.

Summary statistics are often used to investigate and describe data before going on to do more advanced analysis. They are the building blocks of most quantitative research.

Our training course gives practical advice and guidance to help you understand how to summarise your data into easy-to-digest statistics.

Outcomes

By the end of the course you will understand:

  • how to interpret summary statistics
  • the most common statistical measures
  • how they can be calculated and when they should be used.
